FARM SCIENCE REVIEW

OWEA is again hosting a display booth at the Farm Science Review held at the Molly Caren Agricultural Center near London, Ohio. The Farm Science Review reaches an audience of over 100,000 people from the farm community during the three day show held Tuesday - Thursday, September 21 – 23, 2010.

OWEA uses our display booth to provide information to the farm community on the benefits of wastewater treatment and biosolids recycling. Volunteers are needed to man the display booth to provide information, run the “Wheel of Trivia” and to present the OWEA story to the public.

If you have pictures, pamphlets, case studies, or graphics of biosolids recycling activities that you would like to make available to the farm community, this is a great venue to promote biosolids recycline. OWEA has prepared a list of the communities in Ohio that land apply biosolids.

If your community would like to showcase its land application program at the Farm Science Review, please consider sending us some information on your program, as well business cards or contact information to provide to farmers at the show.

Please send pamphets, graphics, contact information, and booth helper information to:

Read the Khuder report here.

Read the OWEA technical review of the study.

A technical review of the Khuder study was undertaken and prepared by Nicholas Basta, Professor of Soil and Environmental Chemistry, School of Environment and Natural Resources, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH and by members of the Ohio Water Environment Association (OWEA) Residuals Management Committee.  This review is released by OWEA to fulfill its mission to “educate our members and the public by sharing information.” OWEA urges all interested persons to read the Khuder study and the technical review to become better informed of the claims made in the Khuder study, as well as the significant number of existing studies centered on the risks associated with biosolids land application methods.

In the spring of 2007, an article was published in the Archives of Environmental & Occupational Health (Vol. 62, No. 1, 2007) authored by Khuder et. al., which reported on research in Wood County, OH, findings which “suggest an increased risk for certain respiratory, gastrointestinal, and other diseases among residents living near farm fields on which the use of biosolids was permitted.”
