The Ohio Operations Challenge was held on May 28, 2009 in Delaware, Ohio
On May 28th the Ohio Operations Challenge/Hands-On Operator Education Day was held at the City of Delaware WWTP. In addition to moving the contest away from the OWEA Annual Conference in June, the Plant Operations and Maintenance Committee (POMC) added an operator education hands-on training aspect to the day. Participants earned up to 5 contact hours for some classroom and some hands-on training on such topics as confined space entry, portable emergency pump maintenance, laboratory testing including seeded BOD set-up, collections system sewer taps with proper pressure testing and trench control, and process control. In addition, the non-team attendees could take some time watching the competitive Operations Challenge teams and root their favorite team to victory.
This new format for the Operations Challenge competition, according to those in attendance, appeared successful in its first year and will be considered again for 2010. The committee has already heard of several future teams made up of operator education day attendees for next year! We are excited that the changes in the day’s activities generated some interest in actually participating for the potential of that “golden” trip to New Orleans in 2010!
In total, 4 competitive teams and 45 individuals registered and participated in the day. The competitive teams included three teams from Ohio (Bowling Green, Cincinnati MSD and Wooster) and an exhibition team from Chicago MSD.
The results of this year’s competition were as follows:
Division 1 – Wooster Scrappers
Division 2 – Bowling Green Waste Water Rangers
Laboratory Event – Wooster Scrappers
Safety Event – Chicago MSD
Process Control Event – Wooster Scrappers
Maintenance Event – Wooster Scrappers
Collections System Event – Chicago MSD
The committee truly appreciates the City of Delaware Water Reclamation Center staff for all of their hard work in opening their facility up for our use! The facilities were exceptionally clean and everyone was very accommodating! Of course, this event could not happen without the teamwork between the POMC, laboratory, safety and collection system committees and some dedicated individuals! The POMC thanks all of those involved and truly appreciates everyone’s assistance in making this new event come off without a hitch despite the rain we were all blessed with that day in May!
And finally, special thanks go out to the generous individuals and companies that sponsored this event and the winning teams’ travel to Orlando for the national competition during WEFTEC this year in October! Please note the list of sponsors above and take time to thank them for their support of the operations professionals participating with the teams and those involved in putting on this successful event! Also, there is still time to sponsor the teams for WEFTEC 09. If you would like your name to be added to the list, please contact the OWEA office, info@ohiowea.org or Kim Riddell at kriddell@cityofdelphos.com.
